My Dog Gave Me an Early Christmas Gift {and Winners}

My new dog is cute. She's awesome with the kids, potty-trained and she doesn't bark or jump on guests.

ChaCha is only 12 pounds and loves to cuddle in our laps and she behaves when left alone in the house.

Everyone who meets her loves her!

She's perfect. Almost.

Her only flaw? She won't allow our cat, Ike, in her presence. She chases him viciously out the pet door into the garage. It's really sad, but since Ike chased our other cat into an early grave, payback is hard.

Well. Turns out she has another flaw.

For a couple of weeks now, ChaCha has been growling at squirrels from the backdoor window. I let her out and she chases them up a tree. Cute, huh?

Perfectly normal, right?

Well. Ho Ho Ho, Christmas came early.

Yesterday she caught a squirrel and brought IT'S HEADLESS BODY to me, as a gift.

It was heartfelt or so I thought from the bloody grin she gave me.

I don't want to talk about HER BREATH.  (If you follow me on Twitter, you know I didn't have time to take a picture because I was deeply contemplating SELLING her).

My hubby zip locked the corpse and chased the kids for a bit. I was just delighted with this turn of events in my home, I tell you.

Then my son decided to go hunt for the squirrel head in the backyard.

I just hope he already bought me a Christmas present.

Wow, I thought only cats brought home gifts. Glad neither my cat or dogs have done that.

I'm totally cracking up! For the last several weeks something has been bringing dead birds (and a dead rat) up onto our back porch. Ewww. I was wondering if they were rabid or something, but a couple of nights ago I saw a cat. Question-answered.

I hope you don't get a squirrel head in your stocking! :)

My mom's dachsund dragged in a deer's foot from the knee down and hid it under her bed.... she found it a few days later when she though she smelled something, bent down, and pulled out rotting flesh! She made my dad come home from work to remove it!

I had read your turmoils on twitter. But your dog looks so cute....... How can she be a killer?

I read about your squirrel madness on Twitter, that would have been terrible. Yuk, Yuk, Yuk. Not a very nice gift to receive for Christmas.

Yay! I just woke up my baby over excitement in winning... Ooops.

Sorry about that squirrel fiasco.

oh that is too funny!! I grew up in the country and I must say I am not surprised...amused, but not surprised!

Get some doggie toothpaste and make the kids (or hubby) clean those teeth! Blech! (yes, they really do make that!)

I LOVE dogs! Had them growing up, love to play with them, think they are so pretty...

But the headless squirrel story? reminding me yet again why we don't have a dog now that I'm the Mommy! :-)

Our miniature schnauzer has brought us lots of bunny parts. She's the best dog in every other way, but she drives us crazy when she goes after the little animals!

I totally feel your pain!

Oh Kristen...I would have been soooooo freaked out by that whole thing! Yikes!!

OK - now I may have to read your blog while I am NOT eating breakfast! Our dog never went after the small animals only the racoons that would look into the house (through the sliders) about 3am. It would drive him crazy and wake up the whole house.

BTW, wore socks to bed last night - slept wonderfully!!

You dog loves you! What a nice gift for you. :-) I would recommend some greenie treats for her breath. How did she adopt you guys?

I was letting the cat in one night and didn't notice until she was almost inside that she had a mouse in her mouth. I screamed, scared the cat, who dropped the mouse. The mouse ran, and I didn't sleep until it found the trap the next day.

I would have LOST my mind! Oh my gosh, hubbie said he found a dead rodent of sorts in the backyard that my Penny killed and everyone I told said that if she really loved me she would have brought it too me- uh no I think that because she left it outside she shows that she knows her mother and I saw it as the most loving act of all lol!

I was reading and enjoying your story and then I saw my name in the "these people won" list, and my heart skipped a beat. YAAAAY!!! I'm thrilled. Just gotta tell you, my parents are missionaries and my husband is in seminary, and I'm the oldest of six kids, three of whom are broke college students. LOVE love to buy gifts for my siblings but funds are tight. I'll be using this to fund Christmas for them! Thanks so much.

Our nasty rotten dog (but we love him anyway) has killed a multitude of animals (that dude is FAST), including (but not necessarily limited to) several chipmunks (which he then gleefully tossed about the yard), a mole (yish, luckily my husband found this one) and a woodchuck (not a scratch on the dog - crazy - our then grocery delivery guy drove up to me using my foot to get the hefty woodchuck onto a shovel as it was in the front yard, the middle of the day in summer and my husband would not be home for several hours but the kids were all home) and one stay cat the day I gave birth to my youngest (that one was really sad, my husband caught him in the act). He is great with the kids and most female dogs. Needless to say, we do not let him off his leash often.

Very cute dog! I hope that you get no more presents like that though! Oh my!!!!

One of the Jack Russells we used to have once killed an enormous RAT...and then brought it in the house to show my husband. He freaked. I laughed.

We now have a lazy dog who'd just as well curl up with a rat than chase one. But I've got news for you. With a schnauzer, you're going to have some more gifts - they are hunters!

My son (10 years old) has ONE question.
Did you find the squirrel head?
OK -- two questions . . . .
Are you going to post a picture of it. LOL
We are friends of your neighbors and have thoroughly enjoyed finding your blog (through theirs!).
Funny how people in a community can meet these days.
You can check out our "credentials" with B&J and hopefully we will meet ya'll someday in the not too distant future.

Sincerely,
Peggy and Pablo

I used to have a cat that LOVED to bring me gifts. He had this knack for knowing how to open doors. and would bring mommy snakes into the house WHILE THEY WERE ALIVE. lucky for mommy snakes do not bother me. RATS HOWEVER ARE ANOTHER STORY...

just be glad that CHA CHA loves you so very much.

That made me laugh so hard! A few days ago my 2 year old walked in our house carrying a dead RAT that my cat had caught and torn it's head off. I nearly wet myself! My son was squeezing it in his hand! So, so gross!

What kind of dog is Cha Cha? She's cute :)
