WFMW-Get Better Sleep

Y'all. I am not a good sleeper. I can't remember the last time I slept through the night.

I've always been a light sleeper, waking to every noise in the night. While my kids were babies, this was always helpful.

Now? Not so much.

I'm not big on sleep aids (a.k.a DRUGS) although I'm certainly not above them when I'm a crazy insomniac.

But recently, I've discovered an unexpected, yet super easy way to get a little more sleep: I wear socks to bed.

I discovered it by accident and it didn't occur to me the first couple of times. There's just something about it.

And, it turns out I'm a genius because this week I heard on the radio that research has PROVEN that people sleep better with socks! Really, it said something about if your feet are warm it causes the rest of your body to relax and you get into the coveted REM sleep, plus all your protons and neurons and stuff work, well , you know. I might be making up that last part a bit, but I wanted to go with scientific look.

So, if you dream of being a sleepyhead, put on your socks!

Oh, by the way, guess who my favorite Disney Princess is?

Yep, Sleeping Beauty. I'm jealous of all those naps.

Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelineshere.}

Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you'd like to share? I'd love for you to join us! Please note that the links will close at 9 pm CST tonight, in order to keep away the spammers!

Oh, interesting!! I will have to try that!

Oh, that's funny because my WFMW post was about sleeping better, too...but a totally different technique. I can't STAND sleeping with socks on. Can't do it.

Liz@HoosierHomemade said...

I sleep with my socks on, but don't really sleep very well. Not sure it's because of the socks though.
Thanks for hosting!

I can't stand wearing socks to bed. However, I have before and wake up to find that I've taken them off while asleep! LOL!

Well, I'm headed to bed right now and I can't stand wearing socks to bed. However. If that is the only thing standing between me and a full seven, then count me in!!! Maybe even two pair! Thanks for the tip!

Megan said...

Hmmm, I wonder. If I put socks on my baby, will she sleep better? At this point I would try anything. I was actually the World's Best Sleeper until she came along.....

It is roasting hot here but I am putting socks on my two month old before bed tonight... I know I couldn't stand it but lets not mess with PROVEN evidence!!! Thanks so much for WFMW!!!

I'm up linking when I should be sleeping...Hand me the socks and I'm giving this a try as soon as I hit "Publish."
Maybe I'll even slather on some lotion first for a while-I'm-sleeping pedicure.

I haven't been posting WFMW lately. But I am reading. Each day or so I'm posting what we are doing with regards to celebrating Christmas.

I have always loved having socks on to sleep - had stopped for a while, but now I will start again! Good to know!

Very interesting! I have no trouble falling asleep (espcially if I lay on the couch after 9pm) but it's staying asleep that I have trouble with.

The Prudent Homemaker said...

When it's colder in the house, I can't sleep without socks. I keep waking up several times a night feeling cold.

In summer when it's 120º out and 80º in my house, I don't need socks. Right now I do, though!

Marianne said...

Yep I have experienced the sock thing. But can I give you one more tip from one light sleeper to another. Find comfortable ear plugs and wear them. They put me in a little cocoon and filter out noices that I do not need to hear (like streetnoice and the snoring of my bedpartner). I still wake up from all the noices I am supposed to hear, like my alarm clock or the doorbell. Now that you children are bigger this might work for you too. I got mine from a hospital shop, they are the kind surgeons use, but I am sure a drugstore has them too. They are very comfortable and I have never slept so good before. Now I even wear them even if my Love is not sleeping at home.

Kim said...

I love sleeping with my socks on, but it is a bit hot here now. But as soon as winter approaches I put those socks on, and don't remove them until it warms up again.

TidyMom said...

Socks definitely keep you warmer! If I'm cold I will go to bed with them on- but when I warm up I have to take them off, I get too hot with them on!

I'm in the camp of non-sock-lovin' sleepers. The only way I can sleep in socks is if I happen to fall asleep on the couch. Once I hit the sheets? My feet need to be bare! So glad you found something that works for you though! I'm a very light sleeper but I seem to drift right back off and I've never felt sleep-deprived...

Oh my goodness....I sweat to death if I wear socks....I usually sleep with one leg out of the covers (C:

Kristen...you'll now be addicted. I can't sleep WITHOUT socks.

Kim H. said...

I've always done that on really cold nights, but man... after two nights of literally VERY LITTLE sleep - I'm totally doing it tonight!

Brandi said...

You poor thing! I can SO relate to being an insomniac. I had issues even before I ever had kids.
My husband just can't relate, either.
My heart will beat really fast, too, when I don't get good sleep, so that just makes it harder to fall asleep!
Oh, I am so jealous of people who can fall asleep anywhere, anytime!!!!

Emily E. said...

how interesting. I personally can't stand to sleep with socks on- in fact, I LOVE the feeling of taking off my socks with my toes right after I climb in bed. weird, I know. My husband would probably catch on fire if he wore socks to bed- and he's the bad sleeper in my family. oh well!

Jen @ After The Alter said...

I find sleeping with socks makes my feet TOO hot but I can see where warm feet are comforting. Have you tried sleeping with a humidifier or a white noise machine? I never used but now I sleep with a humidifier and I find the noise of the steam very soothing! I know a lot of people who can't sleep WITHOUT white noise once they start but it's worth a shot!

Kaye said...

I despise wearing socks...especially to bed. However, I can confirm on those occassions when I have needed to due to extremely cold extremities, I do sleep better. Until I wake up sweating and have to remove them. =)

Sturgmom said...

I actually hate sleeping with socks on b/c I get too hot. But I've started sleeping with an eye mask on and THAT really seems to help!

Sturgmom said...

Sorry for posting again, but I got to thinking... I slept with fuzzy socks on last night b/c my feel were SO COLD when I went to bad, and I DID wake up feeling MUCH more rested today, so hmmmmmm.....

Robin said...

And if you put vaseline on your feet every night before the socks, you'll have nice soft feet. I even do this in the summer with thin low-cut socks.

Catherine said...

Bed socks are a big Christmas present for us. My mom always gets us the fluffiest, warmest, most comfortable socks in the world! And with fun colors & designs. I think she gets them mostly at Kohl's.

Kelly Hupcey said...

Looks like I'm a little late to respond to this one but will try anyway...LOVE Marshall's! They always have a killer shoe selection! Oh and i like to get my Starbucks coffee and do a little me time at the store...totally relate!

Along the same lines, I bought one of those bags you can heat up over and over again (mine has cherry pits in it, but some have rice or other things). I heat it up and put it under the covers at the foot of the bed while I am getting ready for bed. Then I hop in and it makes my feet toasty warm. I like this option because if I sleep with socks on, I always wake up in the middle of the night with sweaty feet and have to take the socks off. This way the bag loses heat and my feet can't get overly hot. But same concept as yours.

Keeslermom said...

I can fall asleep with socks on, but I always wake up in the middle of the night and shove them off. Then they are wandering around in the sheets until I find them in the morning.

My son's OT recommended a weighted blanket to help him sleep, and I made an extra just in case. A few months later, I grabbed it to try for myself, and it was WONDERFUL!

Abbie said...

I can't sleep with out socks unless its really hot out. Glad its helping you sleep. Have you tried sleeping with a small fan on. My kids sleep with white noise and so do I otherwise I would wake up all the time.

Penny Raine said...

too funny, when I was a child my mom always told me that only old ladies wore socks to bed :)
but I wear them too, and have since I was young, have I always been an old lady? lol

That's so funny! I was just telling my husband about this tip after I read it online!

I used to hate wearing socks any time without shoes, but lately I've been sleeping with socks and I actually have slept better and felt better during the day. Crazy! But I'm a believer!

Another wonderful, non-medical sleep aid is lavender essential oil. Rub a couple of drops into the sole of each foot before bed. It works beautifully!

Funny you say that....I'm not a sound sleeper either & have been wearing socks to bed lately (b/c I've been cold) & I have slept well. Although, I end up being VERY hot at night b/c I'm not used to wearing socks.

I can't stand to sleep in socks, so I guess I'll just deal with my insomnia. ;-)

As an aside, my (then) 3 year old came into the kitchen one day very distraught. It seems she couldn't find "weeping poopie" and needed my help finding it. Of course, I had no idea what "weeping poopie" was and wasn't entirely sure I really wanted her to find it. It wasn't until she said "weeping poopie is best friends with Cinderella" that I realized she meant 'Sleeping Beauty'.
