In My Heart, I'm Cajun {Giveaway}

*This giveaway is now closed. The winner will be announced soon in a new post.*

On our long, long trip home two weeks (from this trip) ago, we found ourselves speeding down a highway in the middle of swamps. I am not kidding.

It's called Louisiana.

My hubby decided we needed to learn more about this unknown-to-us land, only four hours from home, so he stopped at a fancy rest stop, complete with an Education Center. [Okay, it was really a complete accident we stopped there, or I should say we were trying to avoid an accident and took the first immediate exit.  Because. Y'all. This bladder ain't what it used to be and I was doing a serious dance in the front seat. I even begged a little).

So, we potty'ed and took a quick tour--complete with a talking bird and turtle--it was like Disney all over again (I am not making fun of you, Louisiana, don't be sensitive). It was really cool.

Anyway.

We hopped back in our car and do you know what The Hubby and I wanted in SOME KIND OF BAD WAY?

Cajun Food.

Because we may not be experts on Louisiana, but we know good food.

So. We stopped at Popeye's. (Again, not joking, we'd been in the car eleven billion hours and I wasn't about to do a sit-down dinner).  But this wasn't any Popeye's this one had a mighty strong Cajun flavor.

I have four words for you: Red. Beans. And. Rice.

And these weren't your everyday red beans and rice. They had been Cajun-a-fied, I'm sure of it.

The day after we unpacked and I refilled our fridge, I pulled out this puppy:

What is that fine appliance, you ask?  It's a Cuisinart Rice Cooker PLUS. It's a mean, rice-cooking machine. It's my first one in my 15 year marriage. I'm finally a grown-up cook!

The fine people of Cuisinart sent one to me to try out (for free!) And we had rice three nights in a row, cooked differently. Plus, it's a slow cooker and you can brown meat in it! I've made soup too. As a matter of fact, I pretty much don't need any other countertop appliances...good thing since my toddler knocked my slow cooker off the counter and dented is severely.

But, it also made this:
Cajun Red Beans and Rice.

Here's the recipe (that came with the appliance):

Makes 4 cups

4 ounces smoked chicken or turkey andouille sausage*

cooking spray

1 can (15-ounce) red beans, rinsed and drained

1 teaspoon good quality olive oil

3 tablespoons finely chopped onion

2 tablespoons finely chopped celery

3 tablespoons finely chopped green bell pepper

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

1 cup (Rice Cooker) long grain rice

••• teaspoon thyme

1 bay leaf

1••• cups (standard liquid measure) chicken stock

3 tablespoons chopped Italian parsley

Tabasco® or other hot sauce

Divide the sausage in half. Finely chop half the sausage; cut the remaining sausage into •••-inch pieces. Lightly coat the interior of the steaming tray with cooking spray. Place the red beans and sliced sausage into the steaming tray; reserve.

Insert the cooking bowl into the Cuisinart® Rice Cooker/Steamer. Place the olive oil in the bowl, cover, and turn on for 1 minute. Add the onion, celery, bell pepper, and garlic; stir to coat with oil. Cover and cook 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the rice and thyme. Stir until rice is opaque, 3 to 4 minutes. Tuck in the bay leaf and add the chicken stock. Place the filled steaming tray on the bowl; cover. Turn the Rice Cooker on and cook until it switches to Warm, about 18 minutes. Let stand at Warm for 5 minutes. Transfer beans and sausage to a medium bowl; add cooked rice mixture to the same bowl. Remove and discard bay leaf. Gently toss rice mixture with beans and sausage. Add parsley and toss to combine. Transfer to a warmed bowl to serve. Serve with hot sauce if desired.

*Smoked chicken or turkey andouille sausage has much less fat than traditional pork andouille. It can be found in many well-stocked grocery stores. Smoked turkey kielbasa can be substituted.

Would you like to win one?

Because I'm giving a Cuisinart Rice Cooker PLUS away today (over $150 value!)

Tell me what you'd fix in it--that's your entry!

This giveaway ends soon!

Oh my god, these are the ones my friends keep telling me I should buy because they're amazing. I could lots of rice dishes, but having a rice cooker would be so much better. And the first thing I'd make? Hmm. Probably just some Spanish rice so I could try it out.

hemmafru said...

I realize this is just so, so boring, but I would make a pot of plain ol' sticky white rice. Like the kind you get in a Chinese restaurant. The kids and I would smother it in soy sauce and gobble it up!

Christina said...

The delicious sounding recipe you shared would be the first thing I made!

Raquel said...

i would cook white rice it is my favorite in a rice cooker!!! or oatmeal i love oatmeal in one too, my stinking rice cooker broke so i really hope i win =)

Rachel said...

I would (attempt to) make Spanish rice since I really like Mexican food. Maybe brown rice because it is healthy. Couscous because it is tasty and versitile. It browns meat? Maybe spaghetti sauce. It would likely be too small for the VAT of chili I make, but a nice size for some potato soup - two wintertime staples in m home. I would try everything! Thanks for the giveaway!

I've never tried a rice cooker, but love rice! I guess I would start with white rice - my daughter and I like to then throw in whatever sounds good. Chopped ham, sweet peas, soy sauce, a scrambled egg, etc..

I've been to that rest-stop...on I10 no doubt. We couldn't remember where it was our last trip so apparently we missed it. It had a neat lil' theater and free coffee. YUM!!!

I'd make just plain white rice with a little spice or just add a can of Rotel. I love rice!!!

What a fun giveaway! You are a blessing!!!

Ohh girl, you should have come way down south to MY house! I live south of New Orleans, and honey Popeyes ain't got nothin' on us! ;)

In South Louisiana it's kind of just a southern thing that we eat red beans and rice every Monday.

It's easy for us housewives just to let the beans cook all day long while we do some house cleaning and catching up from the weekend.

Glad you enjoyed!! :)

Amanda said...

I'd cook rice in it of course! (I really don't know a lot of recipes for rice, so I'll have to look some up if I win)

My husband and I went to college in New Orleans. I LOVE me some Cajun food. Especially red beans and rice- which is EXACTLY what I would use a rice cooker for.

Also, fyi, Popeye's within the State of Louisianna are MUCH better than Popeye's outside the state. They must add an extra magical touch to the food to make it extra good. mmmmmmm Nothing like Popeyes red beans and rice and a couple of extra buttery biscuits!

However, we've discovered we all like quinoa. It cooks just like rice, which means I still hate to cook it and would love to have it in the rice cooker so I could spend more time on the computer. :-)

Love sticky rice with EVERYTHING but trying to be better... brown rice made into some mexican rice would probably be the first thing since I use it in bean and rice freezer burritos for DH lunches.

Unknown said...

I would definitely start by making white rice! I'm the world's worst rice maker. It never turns out right. :(

Ivy said...

Chinese sticky rice for us and brown rice for my husband.

blessings said...

Oh, I sooo need one of these. My family has grown and my little 4 cup rice cooker just isn't big enough. I'd fix brown rice at least twice a week and I have a new oatmeal recipe I'd like to try in it also. thanks for the chance!

km said...

I have NEVER owned a rice cooker. I'd definitely make brown rice. And then since this takes other ingredients too, I'd make my homemade rice-n-roni that my kids love.

Kimberly said...

I think I'd make Pirate Stew in this to try it out...a chicken & rice dish my husband renamed to get the kids to eat it.

I would love to win this. It sounds awesome!

Jingle said...

I would use it to make Jasmine Rice!!! We LOVE Jasmine rice, but it is tricky to get the proper sticky texture without a rice maker. This would be PERFECT!

JC said...

I have never even heard of an appliance like this-it sounds awesome! And since it is like a slow cooker, I know that I would be obsessed with cooking in it! I would definitely make my fantastically yummy Chicken Chili! I made the recipe up and even my kids love it!

I would fix your red beans and rice and my spanish rice recipe which is probably very similar. MM my mouth is watering already!

I'm in Louisiana and I'm creole!! So, I'd use it to make my fav dish in the whole wide world GUMBO!!!!

Those red beans and rice are the first thing I would try. I am sure that we would use it quite often since, it would make my life so much easier to get a healthy, home-cooked meal on the table for my family.

Wow - this is so cool! My rice cooker is cheap and old and the rice is either hard or mushy. So, I'd use this baby to make perfectly cooked rice. Thanks!

Amanda said...

Wow that sounds amazing!!! I would probably try one of the recipes it came with because I do not have very many rice recipes (we have rice a roni over here!)

MahoneyMusings said...

I would make that exact recipe. My husband would love me forever!

I think I would have to try the red beans and rice. My son has been on a red bean kick lately and this would be a good way for him to have them instead of right out of the can.

I think I'm in love!! I moved from Houston to another state recently and was born in New Orleans so you have me missing Cajun food in a majorly way!!! I would definitely make some jambalaya the first time, red beans and rice the second time, rice for gumbo the third time... well, you get the idea!

Unknown said...

I would make lovely, non-schmooshy rice. That would be a nice change! :D

My family LOVES rice! We eat it all of the time--at least three times a week. My favorite has got to be ham fried rice. But I ADORE wild rice, too...

Lisa @ Simplified Saving said...

I'd make italian chicken and rice. One bottle of Italian Dressing, some boneless skinless chicken breasts, and some cheese as well as brown rice. It is tasty. Everyone in the family loves it...and it's great with a salad on the side!

I'm so happy y'all found good food and hopefully some in my home state! I would love, LOVE, love a new rice cooker. Mine is small and it was actually my husband's before we got married; I think it was his sister's before that (and maybe his mom's before that?).

Jessica @ Wanting Adventure said...

We cook a lot of rice, so maybe dirty rice with some sausage. YUM!

Staci said...

Oh I need a new rice cooker so bad. My husband is cajun, born and raised in Breaux Bridge. I am a Houstonian, born and raised. When we met I had never eaten jambalaya much less cooked it. Now 5 years later all I cook is cajun food. I cook jambalaya with sausage in my rice cooker as well as rice for gumbo. My poor little rice cooker is on it's last leg though.

Unknown said...

I am DYING for one of these... but its not in the budget for awhile.. I think I would make just about everything in it - oatmeal, rice, beef stew - you name it!

Vanessa said...

I bet it would make some yummy paiella!

Unknown said...

I would love one of these.. my mom has had one for 40 years!! I would fix jambalaya, red beans/rice, maybe sausage/rice casserole? I'm sure the possibilities are endless.. My family is from La. and a rice-cooker is a kitchen necessity. I would love to have this addition to my kitchen!

I would definitely and happily make RIISENGRUT, from my Norwegian roots. It's white rice and milk, slowly cooked till it's creamy and tender, then served with a chunk of real butter and lots of cinammon and sugar (or nutra seet) sprinkled all over the top, generously! And for us, at Christmas, my mother always hid an almond within the rice in one bowl and the winner got the jar of pennies she had saved all year long. I can taste it right now!

Kelly said...

How about dinner every night?
Well, other thn that, maybe chili? But I have always wanted a rice cooker, so maybe your red beans and rice?

happyhubbub said...

Well - my first thought is to copy you and make red beans and rice...but I also want to be original. So I think I'd try a roasted chicken followed by making homemade chicken stock. Fingers crossed!

Mindy said...

Mmm! I'd make some (boring) brown rice! At least at first ;)

Jason and Sandi Rodriguez said...
