WFMW: Making Your House Smell Good

I love for my house to smell of baked bread, pumpkin pie and cinnamon rolls. It's so much better than the aroma of dog, Eggo waffles and sweaty children.

But I would have to actually cook that stuff.

I found a much easier way and it's a lot less fattening. I like to keep simmering potpourri on my back burner.

Here's how to make it:

1 jar of cinnamon sticks-broken
2 or 3 slices of orange peel (if you have it)
1 jar of cloves
1 jar of allspice

Mix into airtight container. Add two Tablespoons of mixture to every 1/2 cup of water.

(Make sure the water doesn't simmer away. I just throw more water on if it does until the fragrance is gone and then I start over.)

What works for you?

Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.}

Sometimes when I bake with apples, I use the peels and cores and mix in some spices and simmer it. Smells divine!
Thanks for hosting!

I love to make my house smell yummy too! I do this or burn some delicious smelling soy candles....which reminds me, I need to get a couple new candles and some fresh spices for this season (not that it's fall weather around our part of Texas yet...but I wanna pretend it's fall anyway!).

woman what are you doing giving away this secret so freely on the net where very nosy neighbors that stop by unannounced and husbands that have been gone all day and are oblivious to the fact that we have sat online blogging for hours can see how easy it is for us to make our home smell domestically loved?? Sheesh ;-) I have done this for years...sometimes I add some vanilla..sometimes I add pumpkin pie spice..I even had some artificial butter flavor from when I made a wedding cake years ago that I would add to give it an even more fresh baked smell...;-) Great WFMW

I love doing this. and with all the herbs we grow, I will often just simmer herbs like oregano, basil, rosemary and garlic and it smells like an Italian eatery in our house! Of course, the downside is then you start craving lasagna! LOL

I am totally going to try this!!!

I have done this before and it is fabulous. Thanks for sharing and for hosting this event. Blessings.

This sounds like a great mix! My mom always used mulling spices and I did try to follow in her footsteps when I was newly married. And yes, left them on until both the spices and the pot were burned and had to be tossed.

Maybe I'll try yours...and set the timer!!! ;)

What a fantastic idea! I'm going to have to make some of that up while I'm house-cleaning this weekend!!

here is my tip for a little sumin sumin I do.

Get a really nice smelling votive and leave it in your car.

NO MORE PINE TREES to make the care smell good.

just a 99 cent votive and place it some place in your car. If you get hot weather leave it in a votive holder so the wax does not get in the car.

I usually just do the cinnamon sticks and every now and then I pull it off the stove and walk around with the pot throughout the rooms.

The BF doesn't like this because he thinks leavine the stove on is wasteful. Whatever.

I did though recently at walmart find these cinnamon Glade plug in freshners and I put htem throughout the upstairs to mask the kitty litter smell (which by the way there is NONE, suprise) anyway the whole upstairs smells so good like cinnamon. I was shocked at how well they worked. So this year I think I'll just stock up on those since the BF doesn't like the stove left on.

I would love for my house to smell like that, but unfortunately it smells like sweety boy shoes and burnt pork chops. I'll have to try this out before I lose my mind.

ooooh I love that smell too!

Thank you so much for this recipe! I have a beautiful black Lab who stays in the house in the winter, and stinky boys like the gal above...I think that explains it. I need all the sweet smells I can get! There is truth to the motto, "If you can't get rid of the bad smell, cover it up!"

Oh Great Tip! I will have to try this.. My husband would love it! Thanks for sharing!

I had a friend who used to do this! I always forget about this habit! I like it better than candles, tho... I could still forget and burn it!

yes I love this sort of mix and how it makes the house smell so great

Love the wonderful scents of fall! We have a woodstove & over the winter I put a pan with water, apples & cinnamon to simmer on the top of the stove. It not only lets of a great fragrance, but humidifies the air too! Love it!! :)

If you don't want to leave the stove on all day - use a crockpot - works great & doesn't run out of water as quickly. Just leave the top halfway on or off.
