The devil Made Me Do It

The other day, my family and I were driving down the road.

Our windows were down.

A beautiful aroma filled the air in our car.

It came from the vehicle in front of us:

I looked at my hubby and said three words, "Follow that truck."

We tailed the taco-making-mobile into a construction area.

"What are we doing?" my daughter asked, fear of embarrassment in her eyes.

I pointed to the truck with raw hunger in my eyes.

"You're going to eat food from a truck?" she asked in disgust.

"We hope so," answered my hubby. It was like a dream-come-true. I've always wondered about the line of people I see outside these Roach Coaches. (Sorry, that's what people call them around here).

Within minutes, this is what I saw from my front seat:

My hubby held his own in the swarm of hungry people.

He ordered in his limited Spanish and returned with lunch for two (we took my kids to McDonalds (gag):

Three words for you:  Oh, my Word!

Our $8 lunch was delicioso!

And about the line of people outside the fine mobile eateries?

They are very smart.

You crack me up! Just don't eat at the street vendors if you ever go to China. It sounds just grand, here, though. & Mexican food? So much yummier than the Ice Cream truck.

Very smart!

LOL at your daughter with fear of embarrassment.

My husband has eaten off of these (& yes, that is what they call them here, too) for lunch on some jobsites. It's almost always very good.

I would be your daughter in this story, the skeptic. But one bite and I'm sure my mind would change. I like your sense of adventure.

The best food ever from the Roach Coach as we called them:):)

I had a friend who ate lunch every day from a roach coach. She'd be standing in her oh-so-professional CPA attire in summer or winter just waiting for the heaven on a plate! I'll have to check one out soon . . . .

The hubby and his co-workers used to eat from these kinds of trucks at jobsites in Houston. One was run by the sweetest Hispanic lady who cooked it all and served it up on paper plates. Best breakfast on EARTH!

I remember seeing those in Australia all the time but I havent seen one since I moved here. Sometimes the secret places make the best food.

How funny!! I love it... and I remember the days when I was just like your daughter... horrified to see what my parents were going to do next, but then somehow you grow up and realize that those moments are what makes life interesting!! I can't wait to horrify my own children someday!

8 dollars for one drink and one plate of food for FIVE people??? Or $8.00 for all of the family? I am very confused here. AND I have to say, I have NEVER followed a food truck to eat lunch....you certainly lead an interesting life. yes, interesting, very interesting!

These roach coaches have the best tacos! And cheap usually! We're stationed in Germany now with the Air Force and man do I miss those taco trucks!!! My mouth is watering now. lol Oh the things we miss in the states. We were in San Antonio before coming here and you could find them all over. That will be one of the first things we eat when we go back!! Glad you enjoyed your lunch!

We have Roach Coaches all over in Southern Idaho and although I have been told they are very good, I just can't bring myself to eat at them. You have given me courage though!

Our current home was one of the last in the neighborhood to be finished, but we had these trucks make two stops a day just a few doors down from us. I'm proud to say that my kiddos and I had lunch several (ok, dozens) times!

Oh, my... the best.

Ah, yes. Hole-in-the-wall Mexican food is ALWAYS better than Americanized, big-restaurant Mexican food. Excuse me, I've got to wipe the drool off my keyboard...

How funny!! You definitely have an adventurous spirit. Glad to hear that you made a good call, even if your daughter was embarrassed into therapy! ;)

They simply don't have enough roach coaches in SE WI. Mebbe all this snow deters them?

My hubby loves to eat from those. He goes every wednesday-when they have 2 for $1! His stomach is not what it used to be-so he has to only go to one-but he loves it! I tasted it once-way too hot for me! Is that a BOTTLE-a glass bottle of coke? They don't have those here anymore. I would kill to have one of those. Nothing like a ice cold coke out a bottle. They taste different!! They used to have red cream soda-made by fanta when I was little. I loved it! I loved the smell when I opened the bottle and loved the taste! Ahh--memories!

That's hilarious! I bet it was yummy!! I've always wanted to buy something from one of those trucks.

The crowd was an indication you followed the right one. I never have eaten off a roach coach, but my hubby does. A lot.

I'm missing Benny's from Anchorage. The best mexican food in Anchorage. Love that it's fast and cheap. Meet some of the most interesting people.

Thanks, for the trip down memory lane.
