In Honor of Labor Day

In honor of Labor Day and in participation with Rocks in My Dryer, I'm sharing the hardest work I've ever done!

How long were your labors?

Kid #1, 12 hours.
Kid #2, 10 hours
Kid #3, 8 hours.

How did you know you were in labor?

Kid #1, 2 weeks late, induced due to begging.
Kid #2, 1 week early, induced due to threatening

Kid #3, 7 weeks early, emergency c-section, because I like to mix it up a little.

Where did you deliver?

In the safety and security of the hospital, where most patients with OCD deliver.

Drugs?

Yes, many and all kinds.

C-section?

On my last one, after 7-8 hours of laboring without dilation, I was rushed down the hall because the baby and I weren't doing well.  I've never been more afraid of a nurse with a razor!

Who delivered?

Kid #1- A nice midwife who sat on the end of my bed to 'take a looksey' broke the end of my bed-- completely off---she went on to do a great job!

Kid #2- We moved when I was 8.5 months pregnant and a very reluctant doctor I only met once, delivered my son.  When she told me I was too far along to accept as a new patient, I burst into tears and said my hubby would have to do it.  She quickly changed her policy.

Kid #3- The best OB in Texas!  I love this woman.  I'm pretty sure she saved my daughter's life!

Your kid #2 doctor story is kind of like mine. My OB left he practice so I ahd to go to her partner. He was a motorcycle riding OBGYN. Nice enough but I kept thinking, "Now don't go getting into any accidents before I delvier!"

I agree, that razor was the most horrifying, degrading part... mostly because I was conscious for it. The second surgery they waited til I was nice and drugged. I prefer that method.

I had two c-sections and believe me, I never saw even a glimpse of any razor, scalpel, retractor, or any other such surgical instrument. The team erected a nice screen between my face and the 'surgical field' to keep such a horrifying event from occurring. Not that I would have been able to see anything over my huge belly, anyway! I highly recommend the scheduled c-section, btw; it was a BREEZE compared to the first delivery which included actual labor prior to the c-section. Happy Labor Day!

I'm sorry, I got tickled on the visual of your husband delivering the baby, because you did not have a doctor. I am glad that all worked out. :)

I have to say that with your three kids...I was still in labor longer than you. But, fear and a nurse with a knife cuts that out.

Thanks for pointing this out to me! I have one up now too.

Scary on #3! Glad all turned out OK and glad that doctor helped you with #2.

Happy Labor Day!

wow, do i have birthing stories!

kid #1 - i was told big jake was going to come in to shave me. what? why would they give anyone named BIG JAKE a razor? i sweated profusely those 10 minutes i waited for the end of the world. finally a nice nurse named BJ came in and did it. whew!

kid #4 - my fourth c-section! got a spinal instead of an epidural and right after they gave it to me the lady in the room next door required an emergency c-section for a baby in distress. we shared a doctor. he left me and did her. when he came back i was still numb and said i was good to go. um...not such a great idea. since it was my fourth they took longer to get to the baby because of scar tissue and such. the drugs were wearing off. it felt like they were ripping my insides out. i am a calm and laid back person so while i was crying and saying it hurt i wasn't yelling. the poor anesthesiologist was having a fit. as soon as the baby was out he put me out because i was having a tubal ligation as well. there is no way i could have handled much more pain. good times.

I like the the "looksey" mid-wife story! Made me laugh, then my hubby wondered what I was laughing about and had to read your labor story. He didn't laugh out loud, but you got him to smile. But ya know he never pushed out a baby SO...

I can't imagine telling an 81/2 month pregnant lady new to town that you can't deliver her baby!! Glad she relented -- much better than having to go to a strange ER to deliver.

Everyone has a story...how interesting that all three of yours were so different.

24 hours, water broke at home, no drugs.

Sounds like all your stories are different but the kids probably are all too, right? ; )

I can't believe that the begging and threatening worked! Here in Canada they just pat our hands and ignore our whining. LOL.

Thanks for sharing your stories.

Thanks for sharing your labor day stories. I played along as well!

The bed that breaks away at the bottom? Is the specific reason I did not choose to home birth. Because I could not have babies and clean up after the process in the same breath. I'm OCD too (ya think?) and happy to say we're all done! Love love love your blog; keep it coming. Blessings! ~Whitney

What is that about with OB's not taking you when its late in the pregnancy? That happened to me too, I cried on the phone to the receptionist! I got in right away ;-P

Oh what fun! You inspired me to do my own post.

I can't believe the midwife sat on the end of the bed and broke it!!

Thanks!! :)

That was fun! I did it too :) How is it that we go thru all that and then want to do it again? LOL!

What fun...I love comparing stories..although I must admit that I usually win when it comes to length of time - and who doesn't like to "win". lol My time for baby #1 - 90 hours 22 minutes! :) I added this to my blog as well!

I love these stories! My #1 was about 7 hours, text book. My #2 was seriously about 40 minutes, he was born in the car, 5 minutes away from the hospital that was only 15 minutes away from my house. I went to bed 1 week overdue and barely dilated at 2 am. I woke up at 4:30 am dreaming I was having contractions. I was and got dressed and could barely make it to the car, but still thought I'd have a good couple hours. Nope. He was comin and he was comin' now! He still does everything like that. When he's ready, it's full bore and as fast as he can!

I feel so frustrated for Mom's who had 2 natural births only to wind up with a c-section. After a c-section doesn't your modesty go out the window? I had the greatest chuckle at hubby delivering baby #2. Glad the doctor reconsidered.

Thanks for sharing! I also live in TX and have a great OB. We started moving this past weekend, but thankfully it was only 2 miles away (since I'm due in 4 weeks) so I got to keep the same dr.

How funny! We're a texas crew, also. Some of mine is funny now that I look back at it...not so funny at the time!
