WFMW: Eggshell Tip

Please mark your calendars for the March 3 & 10 temporary move of WFMW. While I'm in Kenya with Compassion Bloggers, Shannon of Rocks in My Dryer will be welcoming you all back to her place as she hosts WFMW for two weeks! There will NOT be a special theme for March 3, link any tip you'd like!

I'm not exactly known 'round these parts for being a baker extraordinaire.

Shocking, I know.

I do have a reputation with a certain neighbor for loving cookies and paying my children IN CASH MONEY for their Star Wars-shaped cookie treat, but that doesn't exactly count.

I come from fine cooking stock. My mom is a mean cake-baker. And my mother-in-law lives in the country without Internet or a WalMart and fills her day cooking, gardening and baking. So, you could say she's an expert.

On our last visit, I was fumbling my way around her kitchen (I usually just set the table and help clean up), and my daughter begged to crack the eggs. She did great on the first two, but before I could brag, the third egg was not as fortunate. We both looked into the batter and gulped at all the tiny white eggshell pieces.

I started telling a story (which I do in moments like these, a gene passed along from my father) about how I spent 25 minutes once fishing for one tiny bit of shell.

My mother-in-law took a piece from my daughter's hand and gently placed it in the batter, near the loose eggshell pieces and they were magically drawn to the piece in her hand. "I'm not sure why, but the small pieces are drawn, almost magnetically to the large piece," she explained as she picked up every piece in about 20 seconds flat.

I totally knew that little trick.

I just forgot.

(I also dashed to my purse and WROTE THAT LITTLE FACT DOWN. For you, of course).

Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.}

Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you'd like to share? I'd love for you to join us! Please note that the links will close on Thursday, in order to keep away the spammers!

That is so strange! I'll have to try it.

Wow, that's awesome!!! I'm definitely giving this a try!!

Oh, I so could have used that tip when my son informed me today, "Mommy, we are cracking eggs." I rushed out from getting ready to go tutor to find them sitting proudly in front of five eggs cracked all over the table, too close to the clean laundry for my liking!

Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting said...

Dude, so I've been digging all this time for NO REASON?

*smacks head*

*then writes that one down*

I am SO in awe! What a BRILLIANT tip! Why aren't we sharing this with the world...LOL. Is it weird that I want eggshells to fall into my batter now...?!

I never knew that. My mom wasn't really a cook or a baker, so I'm not either. I'll have to remember that for next time. And I'm sure there will be a next time. LOL

Isn't it funny how we can know a trick, but forget it if we don't use it for a while.

I did not know that. But I have a kid who loves to crack eggs, and I guarantee I'll use it!

Cool tip! Definitely helps with the no egg shell in batter. :D Thank you so much!

Jean Stockdale said...

I have never known that tip! Thanks for sharing. I have done exactly what your daughter did on many occasions.

I am thrilled to hear you are getting to go on a Compassion trip. My husband and I have gotten to do 7 mission trips with our church to teach pastors and church leaders about sharing Christ (usually in very remote areas in the world), disciplining new converts and planting churches. I have walked with the Lord for over 30 years and I can truly say every trip is life-changing for me. God does a deeper work in my life than He could possibly use me to do on these trips. I will anxiously await your posts and I will pray for you. May God strengthen you in the inner man and surround you with His peace, His power, and HIs grace.

Blessings as you serve Christ and His kingdom.

I had NO idea this would work. I often give in to requests to crack eggs from my kids and then regret it! Thanks for the tip!! :)

Grandmother Wren said...

Now that's a handy tip! Our little baker likes to crack the eggs herself so we do end up with bits of shell in the batter quite often.

Actually it's the second egg tip I've gotten recently. Did you know that it's easier to mix eggs for scrambling or omelets if you pierce the yolks with a fork first?

Of course you did1 :)
I'm just reminding you....

Thanks for hosting this super event every week!

love this tip....

and I left the wrong URL for my tip, so I left a second one...
sorry....

Kirstin said...

I do that too! Love that tip

Also, we have found that using a separate clear bowl (I like to use our small pyrex measuring cup) you can actually see if you have droppped shell. Cause you can llok into the bowl from all sides before fishing. And there is no flour or whatever to be confused with.

Kaye said...

That's incredible! I had no idea. I truly learned something fresh and new here today. Thanks!

I didn't know that either. I'm sure to have opportunity to use it soon!

I've never heard that!! I am SOOO going to try!! My daughter ALWAYS wants to crack the eggs when she see's me baking.......and well, you know how that usually goes! LOL

Mom2fur said...

It doesn't seem to work for me, but I never tried holding the shell near the little piece instead of trying to stick them together. I'm going to try it that way. All I know is, the very idea of a piece of shell in anything with eggs--especially scrambled eggs--skeeves me big time! This is why I always break eggs in a clear little bowl, so I can look at it from all angles to find the offending piece of shrapnel!

Sandra said...

Wow, thanks for the very useful tip!

Love the egg story - it "cracked" me up. I had no idea about that tip and have 2 kids that LOVE to help crack the eggs. Thanks for sharing :)

Awesome! I have never heard of this before. I can usually crack an egg without problem but kids end of fishing for pieces of the shell.

I had never heard this before! Awesome. Thanks for the tip. Now I can't wait to actually drop shell pieces in my batter so I can try this.

Kelly said...

Neat trick! I was just fishin' for pieces of egg shell yesterday when my little guy "helped" make breakfast. Definately, filing this one away.
Also, I goofed on the Mr. Linky and added the wrong link the first time...couldn't figure out how to delete, so reposted...sorry.

Alexia said...

Whoa! Really?

I'm gonna have to go bust up some egg shell in a bowl and try this out!

(Don't laugh, I'm not a baker either)

Great Tip.... I forget that some of the simple things we learn are some of the things other people don't know. The funny thing is... I had to do that very same thing tonight when my egg shell shattered into the milk in my measuring cup. :) Just thought the timing was funny... ;)
