Every Winter Needs a Craft Center

For my last Campbell's post, I've been thinking about God and art.

(This ain't Theology 101, just me and my thoughts).

I think God gives each child a creative spirit.

My kids love to create. They don't need fancy art sets or drawing tables. Give them a papersack, an egg carton and pipe cleaner and they will create a dinosaur robot, a silly caterpillar or both.

During this winter activity series, one word continued to show up in the comments: crafts.

Imaginations soar with an encouraged creative outlet and what better way to pass those long endless winter days, then with a project?

We've always had a small spot for markers, paints and paper (and it's usually a giant mess!) I decided to clean out my old antique hutch that I moved out of my dining room, put dishes away that I rarely use and create an art center for my kids.

Each drawer is filled with kid-friendly items. Markers and paints are in the drawers out of my toddler's reach:

Winter + Art= Hours of fun and fulfillment!

How to make paper fairy wings:
Cut paper into fun shapes
Tape onto back
Hop around the room like a fairy!

Instead of tossing empty food containers or pitching leftover pieces, we collect them, save them for the imagination.

Challenge: Let art take over a small (or BIG!) part of your home.

This post is sponsored by Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup who wants you to know that 32 feet of fresh egg noodles go into every can. For lots of fresh ideas about how to keep your kids entertained and the chance to win $500, check out Wintery Weather Fun at DivineCaroline.

I love the idea of turning an old hutch into an art center! That would get so much more use in my house than it does housing dishes. :)

Thanks for sharing! I did something very similar to this with an old dresser! http://amomentcherished.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20schooling
It has worked so well for us!

I'm lucky to have lots of cabinet space and a built-in desk in the kitchen. Our art supplies fill the cabinets above the desk. The kids reach them with help from me or by climbing on the desk chair :). It was so nice to meet you at BlissDom, Kristen, and to have a chance to thank you in person for inspiring me to start themed family nights. As a matter of fact, ART is the theme for our next one.

Looks GREAT! We have a traveling craft center! ;) Our small abode requires me to continually find new 'homes' for things - I think I may have finally found a permanent one for our crafty things, though.

Looks great. We use an antique dry sink for our crafts. It's nice (well right now it's a mess, but it's usually nice) because it's a piece of attractive furniture that doubles as art storage.

Because Bubbagirl gets into EVERYTHING, we have to keep most of our craft stuff up and away. However, we have a folding table that I'll set up in the garage and I have little one dollar bins full of related craft items that they can take down and use and just bring back when they are done. My mom gets us a ton of stuff from Michael's for 10 to 25 cents each. I just have to supply the glue!

That's such a great idea!! I've been saving lots of odd things for the kids to do crafts with..now I just need to find a place for everything!!!

Love the fairy wings! I am thankful to have a couple of shelves in a hallway closet dedicated to our collection of arts and crafts materials.

I love this. I think art and crafts are so important for kids. My son isn't old enough yet, but once he is I plan on having an art center like this. Thanks for sharing!

We have one too! (http://suchakingdom.blogspot.com/2009/09/homeschool-cabinet.html)
Of course it looks nothing like that on the inside now, but the great thing about the cabinet is that you can CLOSE THE DOORS!

This looks great! We have one of those tall/skinny plastic 7-drawer systems, on wheels. When dd was younger, I had it in the kitchen, next to the table. Now that she's older, it's in her bedroom next to her desk. It holds everything crafty from typical pens/pencils to sticker/magazines for cutting to extra ribbon and beads. Just one rule - painting & playdough takes place in the kitchen still, lol.

Our family is blessed to have a great craft cabinet, built by my husband. http://www.flickr.com/photos/crumleydotorg/2611895458/

It is awesome because my 5 year old likes to create things and know exactly where to find the tape, scissors, and stickers.

Great post, it is so true! I used to have a big cabinet in our kitchen solely for art supplies but the kids don't do as much art once they hit teenager status, so I consolidated it to a rubbermaid tub that comes out often! I wish I had a nice hutch to hide mine in! ;)

not only do my littles love to create, but I love it when they create.
One wall in our room is filled with various art projects. And I like that.
They have a couple of little suitcases that we keep their art supplies in...same idea as the drawers! Love it
