Bible Book Challenge

Can you say all 66 books of the Bible in order?

Well. Neither could I. My hubby couldn't either (and we went to Bible College a hundred years ago, so don't feel bad!)

We decided as a family to learn the them. We took the Bible Book Challenge.

I can't tell you how proud my hubby and I were when we said them to each other! We may have even celebrated with chocolate and sweet tea. Because they are both completely Biblical.

Just ask God.

My son and daughter have learned them too. It took us about 4 weeks and I know this is something they will take with them through life.

(As a matter of fact, the Children's Pastor at our church has rewarded both our kids and the children in our Sunday School class who can say the books of the Bible!)

There's a great song by Go Fish called The Bible Book Bop that really helped us. We played it every time we were in the car. I also printed out the lyrics and kept them handy in the car.

Here's the song on video:

Here's my oldest quoting all 66 books of the Bible from memory! I'm so proud of her:

Are you up for the challenge? What a gift to give your kids and yourself!

Can you say them? If not do you feel challenged to teach/learn them with your family??

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
There's a discussion going on in my forum that is interesting....do you pay your kids for grades?

that's great! I'm going to try and do that...

I can say the alphabet backwards, but that's probably not as impressive to God. Makes a good stupid human trick though.

That is awesome!

And I love your daughters shirt. My DD has the same one and its such a fun shirt!

YES WE CAN! At least hubby, me, and oldest three. Six year old is learning, and other three are too little. It is a must do in our family!

Thanks for sharing the link-we were just talking about this for our six year old! Like you we memorized them in Bible College too-it's non-negotiable in our house!

I love, LOVE Go Fish! We rock out to the Bible Book Bop regularly in this house!

Very very good! What a great thing to teach your children (and yourselves). I was blessed to have learned them all in AWANA when I was young. My oldest knows them (mostly).

(PS. My younger daughter has the same shirt as your daughter. We have great taste! :D)

I remember my mom reciting the books of the bible so quickly when I was young. She was so pround to be able to do it that I wanted to learn them too. I had totally forgotten that. Thank you so much for the memory.

What a cute song to help learn those books! I don't know them all off the top of my head, much less in order. My husband and I went to a cool seminar this past spring called "Walk Through the Bible". We did the Old Testament session. It was really neat and basically summed up the books of the Old Testament in order with cute little rhymes and hand movements to go along. It was really cool and great for kids I would say ages five or six and up. If you ever get a chance to catch one, I highly recommend it! The site is www.walkthru.org if you want to check it out. It looks like you can also host the seminars at your church too!

I remember learning them, by song, back when I was in Sunday School... but I couldn't remember how the song went. Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to have my children memorize the books and there's no better way than a song to help kids memorize.

That's been a goal of mine for awhile. Now you've nudged me, I'm going to do it!

Sad to say but I didn't learn until a few years ago. And yes it was from my childern's bible song cd...lol How sad, but better late than never. Even my six years old knew them all in order from the song!!!

I went to private school and learned them at an early age. It's stuck with me and been invaluable. Now when there's a reference I need to look up or I'm following a serman, it's so easy for me. I love it.

That's great!!! I love that song by Go Fish. You must be so proud of your children (and yourselves, too)!

Thanks for sharing and posting the song! What a great challenge, too.

Congratulations! It makes it so much easier to find Bible references when you have an idea of where to start looking.

As a family we took years to learn them, but that makes it stick. We read the whole Bible together - a chapter a day - and each night before we started reading we'd recite the books that we'd already read. (For example, when we were in Leviticus, all we'd repeat were Genesis - Exodus - Leviticus.) Now, every once in a while we'll test each other to see if we still remember. Amazingly, we do!

I can say them but probably only because before being a SAHM I taught 6th and 8th grade bible and we would play a game with it. It actually might prove useful to keep it fresh in your minds. THe class would stand and we would start with the NT and they each say ONE book until we finished. If they missed they had to sit. Those left standing received points or whatever value you want to place on it. The students LOVED it.

Great challenge for your family and I plan to download the song. Thanks, my two and a half year old boys love music and why not learn a little too. :)

Years ago, when I started working in Awana, I was convicted that the girls were learning the books of the Bible and I didn't know them, so I learned them then.

My youngest daughter also created a game we play in the car to help with this. One person picks a book of the Bible and tells if it is in the OT or NT. The rest of the players then guess the book and the person who chose it tells them if it's before or after the book they selected. This is great to help them remember exactly where things are without having to recite the entire list each time they look up a book.

Congrats to your family on this accomplishment!

yep, I can do it! My husband and I both learned them in elementary school--probably a combination of Christian school & Sunday school. I honestly thought most ppl knew them. :) But none of the teens in our youth group do, so we have started throwing in "sword drills" every now and then to help familiarize them with their Bibles.

Alli said...

I do know them! I learned them by song when I was about 7, due to a James Ward song called Holy Books. The books are in rap form and it to this day (I'm almost 33) I still rattle off the books of the Bible via rap (in head) in order to find the book in church!

I plan on using it to teach my kids as well!

I relearned them when my now 20 year old was little. The other two learned at early ages also. They were ahead of the game in Bible Drill and Awanas. It will only help you in the long run. Good to start early. Young minds and hearts will hide them and be able to recall them at the drop of a hat.

Hi! Thanks for sharing today! I do know the books of the Bible in order. I learned them when I was a kid and we would always race to see who could say them the fastest! I have to say I am pretty fast myself:)! I am a 3rd grade teacher at a Christian school and I teach them to my students every year. It is always so cool to hear them say all of the books. Kids pick things up so quickly so it doesn't take that long before they have it!

When I was in upper elementary school I memorized them for Vacation Bible School one year. Thanks for the link to the song, I'll have to save that one!

Thats so great!
I went to a Lutheran elementary school and we learned them all too...I still remember them (save a couple at times!) but you are so right, it is something that will be with them forever!

Tiffany said...

Well, I did know that at one time while I attended AWANA as a girl, then while I attended Christian day school, and then I memorized them again in Bible school. And now I catch myself fumbling to find certain books. EEK - good challenge!!

See, I am one of those people who honestly believe that you can only cram so much information into your brain. Learning the books of the bible in order would probably push out some primo info, like how to make flaky pie crust or where I put my favorite socks.

So for me, I am going to stick with my tabbed bible and risk being labeled a cheater :)

Tina said...

LOVE the Go Fish guys! You aren't the first person I've heard about who used their song to learn the books of the bible :)

I learned them in catechism a few years ago - sadly, I've forgotten everything but Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

In children's church, my friends and I decided to do the "Righteous Rap" for the Talent Show ... so we RAPPED the books of the bible. To this day, I can rap all 66 books. =) I never have to flip to the Table of Contents in Church. I can find the book lickety split ... and it's not because I have a minor in Bible -- it'e because of a rap song. =)

Aw! I'm so proud of all of you! I know the NT by heart, but I get lost in the OT. I really need to review them! Thanks so much for sharing!!

Yes.....I love it!

Our family needs to start bopping in the car to this tune!

What a great way to memorize!

Where did you guys attend school?
Just wondering. We're from Florida and attended Florida Baptist Theological Seminary now named something else. But we were there 96-98.

I can say the old testament books together, I can say the new testament books together, but trying to do them all together I don't know what happens but my brain freezes. Both of my girls can, or at least could a few years ago as they got to do it in front of the congregation and got special certificates from our pastor. (and a standing ovation)

That's awesome! We love the Go Fish guys! It's funny that you posted this because we were just listening to the Bible Book Bop in the van about an hour ago. :)

I am so thankful that I learned all 66 books as a kid BUT had to relearn them as an adult!

Our oldest son can do it the younger one can with a little practice.

I think we'll go work on the right now! Thanks!! :)

Last year I did a discipleship training school with YWAM, and had to recite. I tried drawing pictures and making sentences using the 1st letters of each book, but never made it through with 100% success. Now I am listening to the bop. Thanks!

That is wonderful and I love the song! You daughter is so precious and she looks so proud of herself! I know she has a proud mama too!!!

I learned the books of the bible as a child. I, to this day, remember the song I learned to memorize the books. When searching for a book in the Old Testament, especially the minor prophets, I find myself singing the song. LOL! Good for you and your kiddos!

Way to go, oldest daughter. That's an accomplishment and will serve you well all your life.

What a cutie! I remember learning the books of the Bible to a song when I was a little girl. The trouble is, I can't recite them without singing the tune. ;)

Veggiemomof2 said...

Yes I can, but only because I learned them when teaching Awana & I refresh through my Mp3 occasionally.

Sam said...

Yes, I can say them. I have no idea when I learned them...it was a long time ago. But it came in very handy on the obstacle course when I went on a Teen Missions trip in High School. I'm not sure when I'll start teaching my kids, though I'm sure my oldest(almost 5) could probably learn them now.

We have a CD by Wee Sing that has one song for the Old Testament and one for the New Testament. Thanks for the reminder....I haven't seen that CD in awhile. I will have to hunt it down!

I learned them in AWANA when I was in elementary school and still remember them!

I can say the books of the Bible, but only because I learned a song in elementary school WAY back in the 70's and it still pops into my head whenever I'm looking up a verse! LOL It really will stick with youe kids, trust me.

My kids have learned them for AWANA several times, but nothing stays in their memories like that old song stayed in mine. I'll have to give the Bible Bop song a try with them! Thanks!

We also do Bible drills (or sometimes they're called sword drills) a few times a week in order to learn to find verses easier. They love it.

When I was younger, our organist at church made up a song with the books of the Bible and we would sing it every Sunday, so I've actually known them since about 4th grade. of course, i have to sing the song to remember :). My kids are learning them in the Awanas program at church. So my husband is the only one who is behind.

Danielle said...

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! I went to Christian school K-12th and was in church everytime the doors were open and can absolutely recite the books of the Bible. Just last week I was wishing my kids knew them...and now they will. Can't wait to start working on it.

my mother knows them by heart, the irish orphange she grew up in had a game that they would teach the children (gotta do something with them when you don't have tv/radio etc...1930-40's) as you bounce a a small hand-ball against a wall you recite the books, and then pass the ball to the next person who recites the next ones and you keep going who ever messes up is out

i'm afraid i dont' know it though, but i did learn them in school and church at some point and time
