I have an odd assortment of quirky, but helpful summer tips.
And let's just assume that I'm not odd.
Or quirky.
Ahem.
So, here they are, in no certain order (like I need to point that out):
- Splinter removal is easier if you soak area in olive oil first.
- Toss coffee grounds in vegetable or flower garden for healthier soil.
- Apply lemon juice to mildewed towels, clothes and let the sun dry them.
- Pure vanilla extract will deter mosquitos (and make you smell like dessert).
- In case you don't want to smell like a cupcake, BenGay cream relieves insect bite itching.

oh yes - I save my coffee grounds and send them to the garden every day. :)But the vanilla, cupcakes, and Bengay...not so much. :)
I also recently read that roll on deoderant stops mosquito bites from itching but haven't tried it yet.
Re: splinters
You can rub it out with a pumice stone! No tweezers or needles!

Those are great tips! Thanks for hosting another great WFMW!

Thanks for the tips. We've been using coffee grounds for the first time this year on our garden and have been amazed by the size of our veggies.
I'll have to try the other tips, too. (Love the idea of using a pumice stone for splinters)
Have a great week!
Great tips!
I'll keep these tips in mind, Thanks!
I could have definitely used the olive oil tip yesterday.
Love the olive oil idea! My dd has a fiberglass splinter that we are having a terrible time removing.
I can't wait to try the lemon juice trick. What a great idea!
Blessings to you!
I need tips rather than having any to share this week.
Thanks for hosting this!
Really? Vanilla deters mosquitoes?!? Huh...hope you're not offended if I DON'T test that one! ;-)
I've heard tomatoes love coffee grounds! Nice vanilla trick ~ is it sticky? Does it attract bees ??
Coo! Thanks for the mosquito tip!
I was going to say: love the coffee grounds idea, but I love the mosquito tip too. Hang on - GREAT TIPS!!! I finally got round to my summer recipes, that I should have posted last week!
That splinter tip sounds like a great idea! I'm all about making it easier!
I love the pure vanilla extract idea. Plus it smells good!
Thanks for the tips. My husband is a mosquito magnet; all I have to do for protection is stand next to him! :-) I will see if I can get him to try vanilla. But wait, then the mosquitos might come after me...maybe I'll just offer him Ben Gay! ;)
I think there was only one tip on that list that I didn't already know!! Thanks so much for the info! I'll be squeezing some lemons right away - in the Florida jungle, towels smell like mildew so quickly!! Hope everyone enjoys my article which compares grocery costs between AngelFood and WalMart. Guess who won!
Thanks for the tips. I think we may try to lemon juice one!
So please explain how to use the vanilla! Do you dab like perfume? Or dump it all over yourself?!?! ;-)And does it work for black flies?
crazystina
Wow, I didn't know that about vanilla. Yum! I'll take smelling like cupcakes over the yucky bug spray smell any day!
Happy Wednesday!
Those are good to know. Mosquitos LOVE me...now I have something else to try to get rid of them!
These are great tips! I can't wait to try the vanilla.

Thanks for the great tips! I always throw the coffee grounds in the compost bin....I'll have to try doing it this way!
Who wouldn't want to smell like a cupcake?
If you don't want to smell like Ben-gay, try dabbing a little bit of bar soap on the bite. (Wet soap, of course.) I find this really helps!
Instant cool-off trick: run cold water over your wrists and you'll feel instantly cooler. At least for a little while, LOL!
Making a paste from meat tenderizer and a dab of water - - works well to help not be itchy from bug bites!
great tips. Thanks!
Love the olive oil one-I use it for so much, will have to remember this when the splinters get us!
I love WFMW! One of these weeks I will think of something fabulous to share. Until then I will enjoy everyone else's suggestions.
As usual, a great read and great tips.
Bengay makes my cat go crazy!
Love the randomness of these tips. I learned a few things. Thanks!
oooo! I'll have to try the vanilla. I seem to be a favorite treat for those pesky mosquitoes. I have a tip for splinters. Sometimes letting Elmer's glue dry over the splinter then peeling it off works to painlessly remove it.
So. . . how do I use the Vanilla? Thanks for the awesome tips! :)
I so wanted to add mine but a bit late if anyone wants to read it here it is http://shopannies.blogspot.com/2009/07/kitchen-tip.html

Oh I'll have to remember the splinter removal! I was looking for an easy solution just two weeks ago for our 2 year old. Thanks!
