WFMW: The Special Plate

I love celebrations.

And not just for the cake.

Although.... never mind.

I love nurturing my family. It's one of the greatest joys I find in being a mother and wife.

But I don't leave the celebrating just for birthdays and anniversaries. I pull out the You are Special Today Platefor regular days, days I want to make special. Days that involve awesome test grades, Boy Scout badges or little personal victories like not talking in the school hallway four days in a row. (Not that my kids talk in the halls!)

I inherited my lovely red plate at a Family Reunion from a relative and thought it was a rare family heirloom from Germany. I was surprised to discover you can buy them on Amazon! How sentimental of them!

Toaster waffles and macaroni on a special plate just scream, "I love you. Keep up the good work!"

I love waking up to find my Mother's Day breakfast on our special plate that normally hangs on the kitchen plate rack. Because, well, even Mommies and Daddies need extra special attention.

These plates make fantastic gifts for yourself or friends, but you don't even have to buy one! Just take an ordinary plate and decorate it with colorful porcelain markers (bake the plate according to directions to set in the ink permanently).  Or you can assign the honor to a unique plate you already own.

It's not really about a plate.

But you know that don't you?

Making my people feel special works for me!

{Thank you for joining me for my first hosted WFMW! I'm so glad you're here. You can read the guidelines here. You will find they are exactly like Shannon's from Rocks in My Dryer. I'm excellent at copying and pasting. Some changes may occur in the future, but for now, the host is the only difference in this carnival.}

Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you'd like to share?  I'd love for you to join us!  Please note that the links will close at 8 pm CST tonight, in order to keep away the spammers!

We got a "You are Special Today" plate as a wedding gift . . . and have never used it. Maybe I should take it out of the basement, dust it off, and let it fulfill its destiny: making people feel special.

Thanks for hosting WFMW!

We have a plate with a patriotic theme and stars all over it. When one of my children gets the star plate, everyone at the table has to say something they like about that said person. It is always an exciting meal when that plate is on the table.

The kids painted Amy a plate at one of those paint your own pottery places a couple christmases ago. We will sometimes use that plate to point out somebody special.

The plate idea is neat. I did wonder... did you really think it was German, since the text on it is obviously English? Or was that a joke and am I being gullable?

I love that plate - what a great idea! I haven't seen that before, but I can easily imagine it just making a kid's (or adult's!) day to be served pancakes on that plate before heading off to school.

The next time I'm at one of those paint-your-own pottery places, I'm going to try to remember that idea!

Suz said...

Love the idea! Seen it before but since forgotten about it. Our toddler is just old enough to understand the significance now, so might be worth my looking into.

I actually may go down to the pottery shop (about an hour away) and have him help me make one we can use. That would make it extra special & make for a fun afternoon together! :)

Thanks for the idea!

Congratulations on your first WFMW!

I love the plate idea, too. I try to do something special for breakfast or lunch with each of my kids every few weeks, just to remind them they are precious.

We had a teenage boy who lived near us commit suicide last week, and another froze to death in the woods outside because he was afraid to go home. Kids are just not happy these days because they don't feel cherished. So I want mine to now they're loved!

Visit To Love, Honor and Vacuum today!

I had some friends whose family did this years ago. I'd forgotten about it, but what a special tradition. There's going to be a run on those plates at Amazon this week!

So glad that you could take this on!

I'm excited that the tradition is continuing. I always learn great ideas through WFMW!

I love the plate idea! I will look for one to use for our "special" days. Might even get creative! What A thought!

Thank for being our new hostess!

And I love your idea. I have been meaning to make celebration plate for, oh about 3 years now. My next door neighbor has a kiln IN HER GARAGE so I've been meaning to get a group of girls together to make our plates for awhile now. (You aren't the only one with a super cool neighbor.)

MY SIL, (Happy Housewife) who met you at BlissDom, said you aren't too far from me. Maybe you and your neighbor could bring some cookies and supervise. :)

I grew up with the same red plate and tradition. I want to do something similar, but I'm thinking maybe each person will decorate a plate at a pottery place, so on occasions like Christmas *everyone* has a special plate. Not sure yet, but I'm thinking about it. Didn't know Amazon sold it.... Thanks! (And thanks for taking over WFMW.)

Thanks for notifying me about the deletion. I tried to go to the page with the instructions on how to permalink and it wasn't available so I tried searching Google and still no luck. I'm not sure how to set up permalink (new to this). If (and that's a big IF)you ever have time, could you possibly explain or send me a link with an explanation. Thanks!
Love your blog!

I've loved your blog for months and am excited to see that you are the new host for WFMW!
I have always wanted one of those plates, I thing I just need to fork out the cash and buy one before my kids are too old to appreciate it.

I was at the thrift store one day just wandering with no particular thing to get and this red plate caught my eye! It was buried at the bottom of all this stuff and I had to dig it out. I had been wanting a You Are Special plate for a long time.. and BINGO there it was on the shelf, not marked. I took it to the register and she said $0.50! So with tax I paid fifty three cents! I was SO excited!

I've always wanted a special plate! Maybe I'll get around to it one of these days. I have a lot of stuff to get around to....

Congrats on the big debut!

I absolutely love the fact that the links on your page change color once you've clicked on it. That definitely helps me to know which WFMW posts I've already read!

I love the plate idea. That sounds like a good excuse to buy a pretty plate that I find a good deal on, but don't know what I'd do with one plate that didn't match anything else.
Thanks for taking over WFMW!

My MIL has one of those plates and I love it. I need to put this on my wish list. And BTW, thanks for hosting WFMW!

My mom-in-law has that EXACT SAME PLATE! She gets it out for birthdays. I wonder who will get it next Sunday..?

My birthday is Saturday, my husband's bday is a week later, and my sis-in-law is 9 days after mine. We're all having a birthday lunch at the same time! We shall have to duel over it!

I love this idea. My kids would love this...especially for the random, you-made-it-special days!

I'm new to this, and I accidentally linked myself twice (301 and 302)...sorry. I'll get the hang of it!

I have a plate that I bought to use for special occasions. I just don't use it as often as I should. Thanks for the reminder!

I gave you an award. Come to my blog to see what you are supposed to do to claim it, if you want.

My mom had that same red one for our family when we were growing up. She usually pulled it out on birthdays and report card days. What made it so special was that she didn't give it to the child who'd had the best report card, but the one who'd worked the hardest or made the biggest improvement. She passed it down to me when I got married, but I had forgotten that I had it until I read your blog. Thanks for reminding me of the simple ways to bless your family and the fun memories you can create so easily.

I love the red plate idea! My Mom did this for us growing up. Then, as adults she even gave us each our own red plate to use in our own families! Funny that it's even the same color as yours! I have added a second, smaller plate. And we went with blue. I found that sometimes the red plate was just to massive for whatever we had planned. I also found that sometimes there were 2 kids involved in the thing we were celebrating and so I wanted both to get the special plate at the same time. Not only do we use ours for things we want to celebrate such as a raise, new job, A on a test, etc but we also use ours when we catch the kids doing something awesome like sharing or cleaning on their own! My kids love it so much that they will see their sibling do something and tell me that their sibling needs the plate for what they had done! I love that it's turned into a way for us to "catch" each other doing great things! I am so a Pollyanna type of girl and love that my kids are looking for the good in each other!
