What's in Your Bucket?-Giveaway

My kid's elementary school has a theme this year.

They have deemed themselves a "Bucket-Filling School."

Basically, everyone has an invisible bucket.  Our buckets are filled with words and actions.

It makes people happy to have their bucket filled with good things, like compliments, happy thoughts and kindness.

But if you are unkind in your actions or words, you are a bucket-dipper.  Bucket dippers aren't exactly celebrated.

Don't you just love this?  The kids will be rewarded all year for filling buckets.

And every once in awhile from the playroom at home, I hear, "You just filled my bucket, thanks!" or "That hurt my feelings, you bucket-dipper!"

I love this biblical concept. And, I love the way it's impacted our home.

It's a darling children's book.

But let's be honest, it's not just for kids.

Yes, there have been times I have been a bucket-dipper in the way I've spoken to my hubby or criticized my kids.  Or gossiped about a neighbor.

Ouch.

And, I've met some pretty nasty bucket dippers in my day.

Even in the blog world.

Not you, though.  You are a bucket filler.  Yes, I'm talking to you.  My bucket is about to burst with all the sweet things you've said lately.

Be a bucket filler.

Resist the urge to knit-pick your kids.  And talk about your friend's friend.  Don't belittle your family or refuse to tip the overworked waitress at dinner.  And use your blog to impact the world in a positive way.

Everyone has a bucket. What are you filling it with?

Leave a comment and tell me who has recently filled your bucket. The author is generously giving away 12 autographed copies to 12 of my readers!  I'll choose some random winners tonight (Wednesday) by 10 pm (CST) I know you want a copy for you your kids! Value $10 each.

So, bucket-filling works for me, my family and my kid's school!  Check out other tips at Works for Me Wednesday!

And please visit, The Bucket Fillers they hold amazing seminars and presentations!

If you are a teacher, a PTA member or just an involved parent, I think you mighte be interested in learning more.  Here is an excerpt from their website:

The Bucket Fillers travel across the U.S. to present at schools, churches, and parent, community and business groups. In two years, we have read and discussed our books in more than 700 presentations to encourage and empower more than 70,000 children to be daily bucketfillers. We have also inspired thousands of teachers to create bucketfilling classrooms and schools. Read more...

I'm so glad for this book, idea & post! I am PTA pres. at our school and I would love to use this idea! Thanks for the link!

My bucket filler is a fellow blogger. Tabitha @ Roots & Wings has inspired me a lot in the past few weeks with paper crafting. Because of her inspiration and guidence, I've created endless amounts of handmade cards.

What a great concept! I love it! Count me in! I am blessed to be a part of a small group at church that constantly fills each others' buckets. A thinking-of-you e-mail, a friendly phone call, prayer, meals during hard times, even financial help - we are always there for each other. My bucket overfloweth!

what a great idea! i spent a few years in character education, and this sounds like something i'd love to have. thanks for offering it!

Count me in, please. Sounds like we could benefit from this book. :)

Oh, my bucket filler would be the grocery store worker who complimented me on how well-behaved my kids were today. :) Made my day!

This sounds like a great book. I'd love to read it.

oops...forgot to comment on who has filled my bucket lately!

my mom recently passed away, and i was talking about how waiting in the carpool line, for some reason, is a time of day that gets to me...i used to call my mom and just catch up with her while i waited for my son at preschool. so my friend sent me a card in the mail, with explicit instructions not to open the card until i was in the carpool line. isn't that awesome?

As you know, I personally don't have kids... but I have some of the cutest niece and nephews... EVER!

They honestly have always been my bucket fillers, even though some of them are too little to speak clearly, even the "Hi Ga-ga" and a hug fills my daily bucket. I love hearing my niece tell me she loves me and that I'm a "styler-girl" a word term she's created all her own.

I could go on and on... but I have a 7am dentist appointment and I need to sleep :)

Thanks for this post Kristen, I love it.

God knew i needed to see Him today and, boy, He sure was a bucket-filler through each of them. they even put away my piles of laundry (b/c I was NOT expecting company!) while i fed the baby! yahoo-jah!!

I'm trading my cup for a bucket! ;)
All this time I have had a cup...my cup for the Lord to fill, my husband, etc. Now don't I just sound greedy?

Actually, when mine is full, it runneth over onto others. So, I realize it's not just a selfish thing to want mine filled. HOWEVER, 'til more blessed to give than to receive. My sister, Ginger, at heresmycup Lord is gonna' LOVE this!

Not sure she should switch to heresmybucket Lord, though! ;)

Going to ponder ways to fill those buckets tomorrow...

Thanks for this reminder. It's amazing how the Lord sends bucket fillers into our lives when we don't even realize we need them. My bucket filler is my dear friend Donna who encourages me by always opening her home to our family of seven kids under ten every summer for several days as we pass through her state. Her gracious encouragement inspires me to go and do likewise.

I took our daughter for a quick weekend trip to visit my parents and left my husband home to work. When I got home he had cleaned and put up a new light fixture for me "to show his appreciation for me". Bucket filled.

Lori said...

My 4 yr old daughter has most recently filled my bucket. She told me thank you tonight for something little that we did together a few days ago. I was so touched that she remembered and it reminded me that I need to be more affirming. Sounds like a great book!

What a great looking book! Thanks for the giveaway.

My husband recently filled my bucket - we spent an entire day doing random little things that were relaxing, fun, and SO helpful as we prepare for our first child :)

Julie said...

I have not been familiar with the "bucket filler", but I love the entire concept, what a great way to spread love and kindness like a warm blanket. I had a huge fill yesterday by my 6 year old granddaughter. It was the first day of school and when she got home she called to see when I was coming to their house. When I told her I wasn't coming that day, she said "But Grammie, you have to, you can go to dinner with us and I have things to tell you." Talk about feeling loved and wanted, as you can imagine, I picked up the keys and headed out.

What a great concept! I'd love to share this with our Children's Pastor to use at church!

Last week was my birthday. I have been having some ongoing issues with some family members that have lasted about a year. All of the ladies' at my church took me out for my birthday and completely spoiled me this year! My bucket was filled to overflowing with the love and encouragement I felt from my church friends!

My latest "bucket-fillers" have been my husband and one of my best friends. They've listened and supported me thru some family stress, lending me their shoulders and their ears.

Sounds like a wonderful book that I'd love to share with my kids. What a great concept to help them be aware of their actions and words throughout the day.

Cute concept!

My bucket is very full today. 2 bloggers gave me awards today, 1 giveaway winner sent me pics of what her family is doing with the prize, and I received hugs from happy staff at my son's school when I helped out today.

Now I need to go fill some buckets!

Oops. Forgot to say who has filled my bucket. That would be my husband. We had some friends over for dinner, so all morning/day the kids and I C-L-E-A-N-E-D!!! Boy, did he compliment and gush over it. It was so great to hear all those nice things.

Crayl said...

My bucket had a hole blown through the bottom today by someone, but my husband took on the challenge and mended it and started refilling it too, even at the risk of getting his bucket dipped. I love that man.

I, too, just love this idea! My husband is my constant bucket filler and I have so many friends that are always filling my bucket.

My bucket was filled by my visiting parents who were kind in treating us to a fancyschamncy dinner and making sure all errands had been run for the start of school.

I gotta look up this book. I'm pleasantly surprised a public school is tackling this. What a positive concept.

Fawn said...

My daughter's pre-k teacher implemented this idea with the book last year in her class.

One day I was watching Dr. Phil who had a mean husband on as a guest. Correia never even looked up from her coloring but said, "Mom, he's a dipper!"

Yes, honey, he is indeed a dipper.

My kids fill my bucket every day.

Lori said...

Okay, that "he's a dipper" comment just cracked me up.

Anyway, I have a wonderful friend named Kris who fills my bucket. She's a VERY honest person, so I always know her bucket filling is sincere.

I've recently filled a bucket for a lady i met at camp. She had just had a baby (3mo) She loved my baby sling. She never had seen one, she tried it on and loved it. So that next day I had my friend come out (she makes them and sell them on her site) bring her stock and let here choose. It was so exciting to be a blessing. I love to fill buckets. It's better to give than to receive!

My bucket filler has been my husband. We are moving from Michigan to Virginia (my home state!) and he is having to stay up there for work, possibly for a couple of months :( I have four kids and somedays it is really hard...ya'll know what I'm talking about) My husband has been encouraging me daily, and praying with me over the phone, lifting our family up. GOD knows I love that man! This would be such an awesome book to have, as my kids are having a hard time with Daddy not beiong here everyday, being in a new place with a new school and having to make new friends. Love the idea, and thanks to you and the author for the wonderful generosity!

This sounds like a great book! :)

The last compliment I can think of what yesterday when my best friend told me that of course the graphic I made was awesome, because I am just amazing!

Isn't she sweet?? :)

By the way, in case I haven't told you lately -- love, love, love your blog. :)

Anonymous said...

I *love* it!! I am so checking my library for that book and we'll be doing that at home. We've definitely had some bucket-dippers here lately.

We've had lots of bucket-fillers, too, though. My most recent favorite was when my ds and I went on a "date" last week. He told me that he preferred going out with me, rather than Dad (No, that's not the bucket-filling part. That's just the part where he was trying to get me to take him shopping.) because (here's the bucket-filllng part) "you're so pretty. I just look at you and think, 'You're so pretty.'"

Yeah, that was probably still part of the "can we go shopping" scheme, but it was still nice to hear. ;-)

Lisa said...

Now that I am retired and not out in the general public, I have to say my bucket fillers are my blogging friends. But I also had my bucket filled last week when I took my portfolio to my photography class, the teacher was very complimentary and that boosted my self esteem AND my self confidence. What a nice night that was.

I think this book is such an example to live by. I taught this in my DARE classes for many years. We ALL either add to someone's bucket or take out, it is that simple, but it does happen one way or the other and we get to chose which one we are. Ouch!! I need to be a better bucket filler and not such a dipper! Thanks for the heartfelt post today. I love it.

I think if I don't win, I want to buy this book for my 7 year old grandson, and we can read it together!

My husband's stepmother fills my bucket every day with strength and wisdom to help me through my toughest times.

Currently, my 3 year old is scheduled to have hip surgery on Sept 5th for one leg and Oct 10th for the other. She will be in a body cast for 12 to 16 weeks.

My bucket filler keeps me going; making sure that I know I can get through this and that she will be right by my side for the duration.

I could make it without her, but I really wouldn't want to have to do that.

I told my son how inportant it is to give a smile to people, because you never know what kind of day they're having.

We have six kids and tight finances, and God has filled my bucket this week through a neighbor, who brought over a bag of (outgrown) clothes and shoes for one of our kids, and a couple at church, who invited us to strip their apple tree and gave us some extra produce as well, with their compliments.

Thanks for the reminder about being a bucket-filler, and not a bucket-dipper!

Also, hubby stepped in to be mom to the other 3 kids so I could stay at the hospital. My dad helped pick up kids at school and my mom came and fixed supper for my family. My bucket filler would be my husband. We are trying to sell our home, and so I've been doing my best to keep it uber clean/tidy (not that is HORRIBLE the rest of the time! :). Well, yesterday, he came up to me, gave me a hug and said "You have been doing an awesome job with the house these last few weeks...thanks." It may not sound like much to someone else, but it meant the world to me. Even though I know he appreciates what I do around here, he doesnt' always voice it, so this was big to me.

This past week I had to give a short little presentation to a group of women, and I was a bit nervous. At the end, the VP of the group gushed over my "lovely" speaking voice and mannerisms. Made my day because I always assume I sound like an idiot when I do any form of public speaking! LOL

Oh, please count me in! My husband is my bucket-filler...after many years of being the bucket-dipper, God has set him free to daily fill my bucket!

Thanks!

Just this week Happy Mommy took the time to e-mail me a bunch of encouraging words. Including prayers on my behalf. A total Bucket Filler. But hey, it's all in her name, huh?!!

Blessings.

I would love to share this book with my children. The best "bucket filler" in my life is my husband. When I am depressed, he brings me pie. And he cooks dinner 4 or 5 nights a week.

I just talked to my new MOPS leader and she filled my bucket by saying she was excited to have me in her group. Thanks for the giveaway! It sounds like a great book.

I recently received a card from a lady at my church who reads my blog. She told me how much she loved my blog and then preceded to tell me she had printed out some of my posts. She told me she re-reads them when she needs to be uplifted. Talk about a bucket filler! That made my day!

Hubby has filled my bucket today by being the one to sit at gymnastics with a laptop in the waiting room. Sweet man! What a great giveaway. Thanks. Emily

My husband fills my bucket. Everyday he does so much for our family. I would get a lot less sleep and less time with my Princess if it wasn't for him.

What a great idea! I'm not married and I don't have children, but I love the thought of filling people's buckets! I'll have to maybe try this with the kids that I work with instead! :)

Excellent book referral & concept! I love it!

I have many people who continue to fill my bucket, but the one who fills my bucket the most is my little boy...he always knows when mom needs a hug. :)

Check out my blog post - 'You Do Make a Difference' ~ the video is amazing!

My mom fills my bucket when she brags to her friends about what a good mom she thinks I am. It's kind of funny, because she can criticize me(or give me unsolicited advice)and then I'll overhear her telling her friends with pride in her voice about some parenting technique I use.

My husband also fills my bucket. We have had a few rough patches and he has learned my love languages over the years. It's cute when he tries to show his love in a way that doesn't come very natural to him.

Great post! I wish my daughters school would do something like that!

The last person to fill my bucket would have to be my MIL. She takes my preschooler one day a week for homeschooling. She homeschooled her children and is now passing on her knowledge and wisdom to her grandchildren. She's teaching my daughter how to cook, Bible verses, about counting, etc. I'm very blessed to have such a devoted MIL!!!

My amazing hubby filled my bucket (again!)yesterday when he spent an hour or so at my school applying a wallwords quote that I purchased for my library. We've been married for 20 years and have a very busy life with two preschoolers, but he fills my bucket ALL THE TIME. And I try to fill his, too. :)

My mom is my bucket filler today! She has been telling me what a great mom I am and it just made me feel so special to hear it. Plus, she gave examples. I love my mom!

Count me in...I would LOVE to have the book.

Plus, it goes along with what I am currently reading!

We closed on our house today and the people that bought it from us made gift baskets for each of our kids.

They said they knew the quick sale of our home put us (and the kids) in a tight spot so they wanted to do something to make it a little easier.

We were absolutely floored.

My most recent bucket filling was when my husband told me that he appreciates all that I do and how well I take care of the house, him and our little girl.

It made a bad week a wonderful day!

I have two bucket fillers. First is my granddaughter Katy. She is almost three and is still learning this concept...today she jumped for joy because I picked her up from preschool. She did not know that I was going to pick her up. She jumped into my arm and gave me a hug when she saw me. She also said, "Thanks, Mamaw, for coming to my school."

The second bucket filler is my friend, Alice. I have never heard Alice say an unkind word about anybody. I have also never heard Alice gossip. She freely gives hugs and calls to make sure that all is okay. She is fun to be around and was the first person to make me feel welcome at our church six years ago when we first started attending.

Who has filled my bucket lately? My kids. Definitely my kids. :)

Oh, I would just love a copy of that book...not only for my four special needs teens at home but for my five grandchildren! What a help that would be!

My bucket has recently been filled by my boys... It IS the most precious thing when they are so complimentary, and when they throw themselves into things that you ask them to do for you. I am very blessed.

My mom is constantly filling my bucket by encouraging me to be a good mom, good wife, and nice to my in-laws who will be visiting this weekend. :)

I love this idea! how cool!

My bucket filler today was DH who, although coming out of general anethesia kept telling me how much he loved and and how much he appreciated me- and now he doesn't even remember it! He could have said many things while being "under" but what he said brightened my day!!

I love it! Boy do I need to work on being a bucket filler. I'm afraid I dip too much.
My fillers would be my kids though, that's for sure!
Love your blog.

I would love to share this book with my family and my school! My 4yrold son filled my bucket this morning when he said "Mum, you deserve a raise". How cute! And how right :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this GREAT site!!! I love it!

I'm the class parent for my son's class and I would LOVE to use this in the classroom. I'm sure the teacher will love it too. My daughter is also in student government. I think she should talk this over with the other kids. Maybe they can use this idea in middle school too.

My friend Lexi is my "bucket filler". I have been feeling down lately and my friend Lexi always has a way of helping me to see the best in any situation. She's always filling me up with confidence and commending me on the things I do and making me see the "big picture" so that things don't seem so bad after all.

My husband also filled my bucket today. He knows how badly I want to go back to college and finish my degree, but $$ has always been an issue. He told me today that no matter what he'll find a way to help me go back to school and insists that I go talk to a counselor at school about taking a class this semester. YEAH!!!!!!! I hope I can!!!

Thank you for an AWESOME giveaway!

What a great idea for your kids' school! I wish more school would follow this. Perhaps we'd have fewer bully episodes.

I am too late, but I can still hope to be entered. This is a wonderful idea for Sunday School classes, also. In a small way, it reminds me of
"Random Acts of Kindness!" Please enter me in your book drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

I know I am past the deadline but that is ok I wanted to comment anyway.

My kids fill my bucket daily!

I love that their school is doing this I am going to check into the site and see if I can get this going at my son's school. It is truly a fabulous idea.

I actually had a book for my job called Monday Morning Leadership (Wonderful Book BTW)anyhoo the author used the bucket filling concept and I had thought it was such a great thing. I guess that is why it excites me so much that they are doing this with a children's book.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

Ok I am going to do a little bucket filling myself.

I just found your blog over this past week I do not even remember where but I just wanted to share with you that I think you have such a wonderful, funny, inspiring blog.

I spent a good amount of time here in the first few days and I read everything you have written. Of course I subscribed and I get so excited to see when I get your newest post.

Some people have a gift when it comes to blogging and you my friend are one of them!

Thanks so much!

P.S First I am sooo sorry I made such a long comment.
But I wanted to add one more thing.

I wanted to ask you and all the other commentors to keep Marsha of Our Homeschool Happenings in your prayers. I have just started to visit here blog as well so I do not "know her" but she lost her 3 year old little boy last night. He went missing and divers found him in their pond.

I cannot even begin to think what that family is going through right now. It is heavy on my heart and I know that they could use all the prayers that they can get right now.

So sweet. I did not realize there was a book about this. I would love to read it!! So count me in the drawing :).

I heard a friend one time say "Pretend everyone you meet is wearing a sign that says 'Make me feel important today.'" I try to live by that. I love it!

This may be old news (I didn't read all 133 comments), but there's an adult version of this book too! Did you know? It's great!

And once again, thanks for another great post!

It's so true we need to fill those buckets! I treasure one friend in particular who just listens and prays.

Thanks and I hope I get the book!
